 Understanding the Basics of Fire

What is Fire?

Fire is a chemical reaction known as combustion. It occurs when three elements come together: fuel, oxygen, and heat. These elements combine to create flames and release energy in the form of heat and light.

Types of fires

According to the type of fuel used, there are various types of fires:

Class A fires:

Involves ordinary combustibles like wood, paper, cloth, and some plastics.
Extinguished using water or Class A fire extinguishers.

Class B fires:

Involves flammable liquids and gases, such as gasoline, oil, and propane.
Extinguished using foam, CO2, or Class B fire extinguishers.

Class C fires:

Involves electrical equipment or wiring.
Extinguished using non-conductive agents like CO2 or Class C fire extinguishers.

Class D fires:

Involves combustible metals, such as magnesium or titanium.
Extinguished using special Class D fire extinguishing agents.

Class K Fires:

Involves cooking oils, fats, or greases.
Extinguished using wet chemical fire extinguishers.

 Fire Emergencies and Response

Dialling the Emergency Fire Telephone Number

In the event of a fire emergency, it’s crucial to contact the appropriate authorities promptly. In Nigeria, the emergency fire telephone number is 112. Memorize this number and teach it to your family and colleagues.

Fire Hydrants

Urban areas have fire hydrants strategically positioned to supply a dependable source of water for combating fires. Though this is not widely available in Nigeria, that is why sometimes when firefighters come around, they would say they have run out of water. These fire hydrants are necessary for local fire departments to have quick access to water in an emergency. Never block access to or park in front of a fire hydrant, since this can make it more difficult to put out a fire.

Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are vital tools for immediate fire control. Here’s what you should know:

Types of Fire Extinguishers: Different types of fire extinguishers are designed for specific fire classes. Ensure you have the appropriate extinguisher for your environment.

PASS Technique: When using a fire extinguisher, remember the PASS technique:

Pull the pin to unlock the extinguisher.
Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.
Sweep the nozzle from side to side until the fire is out.

Fire in Buildings

Preventing Fires in Buildings

Fire prevention is the first line of defence. Here are some key steps:

Smoke Detectors: Install smoke detectors in every room and regularly test them.

Electrical Safety: Avoid overloading electrical outlets, and inspect wiring for damage.

Cooking Safety: Never leave cooking unattended, and keep flammable items away from stove tops.

Candles and Heaters: Use candles and space heaters with caution, and keep them away from flammable materials.

Evacuation Plans

Having an evacuation strategy in place is essential in the event of a fire. Plan escape routes, choose meeting locations, and make sure everyone in your home or place of business is aware of the plan. Regularly practising fire drills will guarantee a smooth escape in an emergency.

Fire Safety in High-Rise Buildings

High-rise buildings present unique challenges in the event of a fire. It’s essential to:

Know the building’s evacuation plan and the location of fire exits and stairwells.

Avoid using elevators during a fire; always use stairs.

Close doors behind you to slow the spread of smoke and flames.

Fire Safety

Fire Safety Education

Inform yourself, your loved ones, and your coworkers about the fundamentals of fire safety.

Think about enrolling in a fire safety course to develop your emergency response skills.

Fire Safety Equipment

Ensure that smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and sprinkler systems are properly maintained and in working order.

Regularly inspect and service heating appliances, chimneys, and electrical systems.

Fire Safety for Children

Teach children about fire safety from a young age, including the dangers of playing with fire.

Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children.

Conclusion: Fire Safety Saves Lives

A shared duty, fire safety necessitates awareness, readiness, and education. We may safeguard ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities against the catastrophic effects of flames by being aware of the many types of fires, being aware of how to react to fire situations, and putting preventive measures into place. Never forget that being fire safe is a commitment to everyone’s safety and well-being, not just a choice. Make our world a safer place by staying educated, being prepared, and working together.
